Ambala doesn't have its own Sainik School — despite its cantonment heritage

Ambala Cantonment, established in 1843, is one of the largest and oldest military stations in India and home to the Indian Air Force's Western Air Command. It would be a reasonable guess that a Sainik School sits here too — but it doesn't. Haryana's schools are at Kunjpura (Karnal), Rewari, and a third under construction at Matanhail (Jhajjar), alongside newer PPP-model schools at Fatehabad, Rohtak and Kurukshetra. This does not stop Ambala students from applying — it just means travelling to one of these for the actual campus. The quota mechanics are covered below.

The Basics

What is a Sainik School, exactly?

Sainik Schools are English-medium, CBSE-affiliated residential schools run under the Sainik Schools Society, Ministry of Defence. They admit students into Class VI and Class IX, combine the standard CBSE curriculum with NCC training, drill and physical conditioning, and are built primarily to prepare cadets for entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA) and Indian Naval Academy (INA) — though most graduates go on to a wide range of careers, not only defence ones.

Can Ambala Students Apply?

Yes — here's which quota you fall under

Seats at every Sainik School are split between students domiciled in that school's home state and students applying from elsewhere. Since Haryana does have Sainik Schools, Ambala applicants (as Haryana residents) are eligible for the home-state quota at any of them.

Reserved for candidates domiciled in the state where that specific Sainik School is located. As Haryana residents, Ambala applicants qualify for this category at Kunjpura, Rewari, and Haryana's newer PPP schools.

Step by Step

The AISSEE admission process

The same national process applies whether a student is applying under the home-state or all-India quota.

AISSEE Registration

Applications typically open online around September–October for the following academic year, on the official NTA portal. Only one application per candidate is accepted.

Written Entrance Exam

An OMR-based, multiple-choice paper covering mathematics, language, general knowledge and intelligence, usually held in January. There is no negative marking.

Result & Merit List

Results and category-wise All India Ranks are published roughly 4–6 weeks after the exam, separately for Class VI and Class IX.

E-Counselling & Seat Choice

Qualified candidates register for online counselling (AISSAC) and rank their preferred schools; seats are allotted by merit and preference.

Medical Exam & Document Verification

Allotted candidates undergo a medical fitness check and original-document verification before a seat is confirmed.

Joining

The academic session typically begins in April, at the specific school allotted during counselling.

Is there really no Sainik School in Ambala?+
Correct, as of this writing. Ambala's cantonment heritage doesn't include a Sainik School specifically. Haryana's nearest running option to Ambala is Kurukshetra, roughly 45 km away. Check the official AISSEE portal for the latest, since Haryana's Matanhail school is still under construction and could open in a future cycle.
Does my child have to live near a Sainik School to apply there?
No. Physical proximity doesn't matter for eligibility. What matters is domicile: as a Haryana resident, an Ambala student qualifies for the home-state quota at any Haryana Sainik School, and can also apply to schools in other states under the all-India quota.
Is coaching required to clear AISSEE?
